Bermuda's champion triathlete Flora Duffy has announced that she'll not be on the start line for this year's World Triathlon Series in Bermuda, due to a long-standing injury that prevents her from running.
In making the announcement, she said, "Of course I hoped I would be ok to line up in Bermuda, but that is not the case. I had to really back off training, unload and let the tendon heal. Brutal news to announce."
The Local Organising Committee of World Triathlon Bermuda is fully behind Flora Duffy as she has had to make the difficult decision to withdraw from the MS Amlin World Triathlon Bermuda 2019 women’s elite race. Committee Chair Pat Philip-Fairn said “Naturally we empathize with for Flora and recognize how hard this is for her after months of rehabilitation and building up her training towards this event. Flora was so looking forward to competing on home soil again.”
“We're right with Flora as she works her way back to full fitness and winning races again. We know that Bermuda will support her with every swim, bike and run as she trains towards next year's Tokyo Olympics”, she said.
Meanwhile Flora still wants to be involved in the event as much as possible. Her injury is only preventing her from competitive running at this time, so she now intends to form a relay team to compete in the Age Group race on Saturday morning. Hometown crowds will be able to see the former World and Commonwealth Champion compete in the bike leg through the streets of Hamilton.
Flora will also be very involved with World Triathlon Bermuda 2019 festivities as an ambassador throughout the weekend, creating opportunities for her Bermuda fans to see her on each day of the event. Details of her appearances will be publicised this week.
Bermuda Triathlon Association President, Steven Petty said, “We feel for Flora but we also know that she has the strength to overcome this as a small setback in her overall Olympic goal. Flora shows great sportsmanship to enter the Age Group race and to still deliver on her promise of racing in front of home crowds.” He said, “This means everyone entered in the Age Group race will be competing alongside a World Champion. How often does that opportunity come along? We look forward to welcoming Flora home.”
The MS Amlin World Triathlon 2019 on April 27th, 2019 is the second of three annual World Series Triathlon events that Bermuda will host; in 2021 the island will be home to the ITU Grand Final and Age Group World Championships. The event’s Title Sponsor is MS Amlin and the Main Sponsors are Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, BF&M, BTA, NTT and Royal Gazette. The City of Hamilton’s support also contributes significantly to the success of the event.
