British Olympian and 4 x ITU World Champion Tim Don visits Bermuda

Bermuda’s young triathletes had the chance to meet inspiring ITU World Champion British triathlete, Tim Don.

‘The Don’, an inspiring athlete was a special guest at this year’s first World Triathlon Bermuda Sunday Kids Coaching Clinic, which was open to all children 7 years and older, at all levels of the sport.

Tim Don is well-known for the inspiring way he has overcome adversity. At the height of his career as the fastest Ironman triathlete of all time, a cycling crash left him with a broken neck just days before the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, where he was a favourite to win. The crash could have ended his career but he didn’t let it stop him. He wore a full 'halo' head brace for 3-months and worked his way back into competition. He produced an inspiring documentary - The Man with the Halo – which has been shared on WTS Bermuda Facebook @tribermuda.

The World Triathlon Bermuda Kids Coaching Clinics will be held every second Sunday from now until the April event. The dates are March 10th and 24th and April 7th and 21st. The sessions encourage more children to try the sport of triathlon and provide transition skills practice.

The Sunday coaching is organised by the Bermuda Triathlon Association, to prepare young athletes for the RenaissanceRe Kids Duathlon on Friday April 26th. The Kids Duathlon will happen the day before the big event on Saturday April 27th, where Flora Duffy, Bermuda’s own World Champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, will compete again.

WTSBDA Committee Chair, Pat Phillip-Fairn said; “The RenaissanceRe Kids Duathlon is an important part of the World Triathlon Bermuda Festival Weekend. Last year more than 200 children raced on Front Street, experiencing the thrill of the ITU World Triathlon finish line.” “Since Flora Duffy’s outstanding 2018 performance there has been a surge of interest from Bermuda’s children in the sport, which is encouraging to see. We look forward to building on that this year.”

The MS Amlin World Triathlon 2019 will be hosted in Hamilton on April 27th, 2019. It is the second of three annual World Series Triathlon events that the island will host; in 2021 Bermuda will be home to the ITU Grand Final and Age Group World Championships.

MS Amlin World Triathlon Bermuda 2019 is supported by Title Sponsor MS Amlin and Main Sponsors Hamilton Princess Hotel & Beach Club, BF&M, BTA, NTT and the Royal Gazette. The event is also supported by the City of Hamilton and the many local businesses that contribute to its success.
